Are you a perfect parent? It’s safe to say no because, let’s face it, no one is. Parenting can be challenging, especially when you share custodial responsibilities with an ex-spouse or co-parent. Now a local church is offering a parenting class to help.
The Center for Enlightenment in Ferndale, Michigan, is offering a “Systematic Training for Effective Parenting” (STEP) starting March 10, 2015 at 6:30pm. Facilitated by Rev. Kate Kosmal, of Sacred Services, International, the four-session class will help parents develop better parent-child relationships.
The Center for Enlightenment is an inter-faith Spiritualism church, dedicated to:
“Bringing to light the Will of God and cultivating an awareness of the highest potential of the soul. Joyfully serving the community with love and understanding free of judgment. Creating opportunities for life-long learning and growth.”
Rev. Kosmal provides Officiating, Spiritual Direction, Prosperity Project ©, and AA and Family Program Referral services and is an ordained minister at the Center for Enlightenment. She has been certified to facilitate STEP training since 2009.
The parenting class will help mothers and fathers understand and address their children’s behavior and needs. They will learn problem solving techniques and communication skills reducing tensions between and among family members.
STEP can also be used to satisfy court ordered parenting classes. At the end of the four week program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. Providing this certificate to the Friend of the Court can help estranged parents demonstrate their commitment to better and more engaged parenting.
Rev. Kosmal encourages caregivers of all kinds to get involved.
“Parents with or without custody, grandparents, and adult children giving care to their parents attend. Self-care also improves when parenting (the inner child) with STEP.”
Parenting classes like STEP can improve your relationship with your children, improving their experience growing up. Kids learn problem solving skills from their parents and often mirror how their moms and dads handle disputes. By improving their own parenting skills, parents can help their children learn problem ownership and resolution, freeing families from conflict and emotional harm at home and in the community.
The Systematic Training for Effective Parenting class is one way to learn those skills. It costs $80.00 per person or $120.00 per couple and includes a book by Don Dinkmeyer and Gary D. McKay. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling (586) 944-0458 or emailing Rev. Kosmal at firstname.lastname@example.org.
